Origin of Morong Bataan

Morong originally called "Bayandati", was a small settlement located in Nagbalayong. Due to the scarcity of land available for cultivation, the early inhabitants migrated to adjacent areas where wider lands can be discovered. They found Poblacion, the present site where the Spaniards met the natives of Moron.

The name Moron was given during the 16th century. The natives were having a festive activity when a group of Spaniards arrived and inquired from the natives the name of their place. The history of the first 30 years of Spanish rule is marked by many struggles with the Moros, the people thought that the Spaniards were asking about the Moros who retreated after a severe fighting. So they replied, “Mga Moro umuurong” hence this place was called Moron.

Moron together with Bagac of Bataan up to Maragondon in Cavite became part of the Corrigimento de Mariveles that administered by the Franciscan friars. It was only  in 1607, after 29 years  that Moron was officially founded by Fr. Rodrigo de San Miguel as an ecclesiastical place and as a pueblo  including the coral stone church place under the maternal protection of Our Lady of the Pillar. In 1754 Gov. Gen. Manuel Arandia annexed Moron and other eleven municipalities under the province of Bataan.

The name "Moron" was later changed to Morong by a former Congressman of Bataan Jose R. Nuguid in accordance with Republic Act No. 1249 which was approved by the National Assembly on June 10 , 1955. The move was made because the municipality’s former name was thought to mean “immature or unintelligent person”
